“Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your FIRST LOVE.” Rev. 2:4
The Lord has been stirring in our hearts the importance of keeping Him FIRST. We both made the choice many years ago when we answered the call to NOT live our lives for ourselves but for JESUS. We are bought with the precious price of His blood and we understand and pray continually, “Not our will, but Thine be done.” So one would think that these holy decisions would obviously keep Him as our FIRST LOVE. But we have learned the hard way that we can even get busy with the “business of ministry” and neglect our personal fellowship with The Lord. That is exactly what this scripture above is talking about. Jesus commends the church for all the good works they are doing. But then He says: “I have this [charge] against you, that you have left your FIRST LOVE [you have lost the depth of love that you first had for Me]. So remember the heights from which you have fallen, and repent…”
It is good to examine our hearts and ask the Lord to show us if He really is FIRST. The very first commandment given to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 5:6-7: “I am the LORD your God who brought you out of bondage. ‘You shall have no other gods (idols) before Me.” In this context, gods is defined as: “Any person or thing exalted too much in estimation, or honored as the chief good.” Basically, anything we place more trust in and give more importance to than The Lord. For example, obsessing over what we eat and how we look can take priority in our thoughts every day and become an idol. Only the Holy Spirit can reveal to us if any of these areas have taken too much importance in our life. If He shows us, then we simply repent by asking the Lord to forgive us.
In Matthew 6:33, Jesus teaches us, “But SEEK (aim at and strive after) FIRST of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then ALL these things taken together will be given you besides.” We don’t have to be driven to succeed in our career, family, or health. When He is first, He ADDS all these things to us! But what we seek FIRST depends on what we are focused on every day.
Matthew 6:21-23 says, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. So if your eye is sound, your entire body will be full of light. But if your eye is unsound, your whole body will be full of darkness.” Whatever we treasure in life is where our heart, (First Love) is. And what we treasure is determined by what we are focused on. The “eye” in this verse represents what we see, our focus. Right focus produces light. Light dispels the darkness and any confusion. When the light is on, you can see everything clearly. We need to ask ourselves, what are we focused on today?
Please notice, we said TODAY. Focusing on tomorrow can cause worry. Focusing on the past can produce regret. Both are futile. The only productive focus is TODAY! In Matthew 6:34 Jesus said, “So do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own. Sufficient for each day is its own trouble.” For example, Christi said one of the first things they taught her in Interior Design was always to establish FIRST the Focal Point of every room. Then as the design developed, everything in the room: lighting, colors, art, furniture and patterns, all revolved around and added emphasis to the focal point.
***Jesus is our focal point. Everything in our life should revolve around Him and add to our relationship with Him. NOTHING should ever distract or take away.***
Finally, we will only be as strong as our intimacy with Him. Ephesians 6:10 says, “Be strong in the Lord [be empowered through your union with Him]; draw your strength from Him [that strength which His boundless might provides].” Wow! If we are going to WIN in life, we must cultivate a close relationship with JESUS. Allowing Him to lead every decision, word and action. We can only do this when we take time to listen. Please let me encourage you to make the quality decision to invest time each day to fellowship with The Lord by reading His Word. You can take advantage of the FREE resources we have available at www.mylon.org to help you in your journey.
As you sow your seed this month, be excited knowing that your giving is helping us encourage others to choose Jesus as their FIRST LOVE. Because you have chosen to SEEK FIRST His kingdom through supporting the Gospel, be expecting ALL these things to be added unto you!
We truly LOVE and APPRECIATE you!
