RECEIVE THE LOVE OF GOD
Mylon and I don’t take these monthly love letters to you lightly. We pray and ask the Lord for direction on how He would have us encourage you. This month, I’d like to share with you some of my testimony about how I received the Love of the Father…
What made the difference for me? I get asked that question a lot. Why was I not angry over my biological father walking away and leaving me and my mom alone without any support? Why did I not go through rebellious teenage years experimenting with drugs or alcohol and refusing to obey my parents? I remember when others began to ask me these questions, I thought it was strange because it never entered my mind growing up to abandon my walk with the Lord. I only desired to know Him more. Not that I didn’t make many mistakes and need the mercy of God daily. But I can say that I was determined to stay in fellowship with Him through prayer, reading His Word and attending church. So, after observing the status of so many angry youth today, I now ask myself, what made the difference for me?
To answer that question I have to begin with a story I call, “The Adventures of Twirling Girl.” (If you would like to hear this story in its entirety, you can hear it on the CD that accompanies The Adventures of Twirling Girl children’s book available at www.mylon.org) It’s the moment in my life when I chose to believe and receive the Love of God.
At a very young age, when my earthly daddy walked away, my mother taught me Psalms 68:5, “A father to the fatherless is God.” She reminded me daily that I have a Heavenly Father who loves me and He will meet every need. Then He proved it to me! Like every other child, I was growing fast and constantly outgrew my shoes and clothes. At one point, I needed dresses for church. It was a time when every little girl wore her prettiest dresses to church and twirled on the playground. We were living in government subsidized housing and on a very strict budget. So buying church dresses was definitely not an option. But my mom was learning and teaching me, to take everything to the Lord in prayer. In her innocence, she believed that He would hear her prayer. Even if it was for something that others would call lavish…pretty twirling dresses for her little girl!
Shortly after my mom and I prayed together asking the Lord for help, a young man who was a Christ for the Nations bible student, was walking though the children’s section at Sears department store. Oddly, he was prompted by the Holy Spirit to buy some little girls dresses. This young man was single, with no children and he was a student! So any extra money was paying for his education. Obedience to the Lord would require sacrifice for him and a total step of faith. He didn’t know who the dresses were for, so he didn’t know the size or even the right style to buy (He was a single guy!) Despite those uncertainties, he obeyed The Lord and bought the dresses in faith. The next day, when he was walking by my mom in the hallway at work, the Holy Spirit said, “Those dresses are for Sharon’s little girl, Christi.” (It thrills me that He knows my name! Jesus said, “I know my sheep and I call them by name.” Please be encouraged, He knows your name! He understands your challenges today and He hears your prayers.) When my mom brought those dresses home to me, her declaration wasn’t ‘Look how good we prayed,’ it was ‘Look how much your Father loves you! He gave you these pretty new dresses!’ And yes, they fit perfectly! On the church playground, I remember twirling and telling all who would listen, “Look how much my Father loves me! He gave me these pretty new dresses!”
That story for me is what Ephesians 3:19 calls an experience with the love of God that “far surpasses mere knowledge.” It was good that my mom told me how much I was loved but then God proved it to me! It was through that encounter that I chose to believe at a young age, the Father loved me. I John 4:19 says, “We love because He first loved us.” He loved us FIRST. When we receive it, then we can love Him in return. Out of that love, we find that we want to do all that He asks us to do. Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will obey My commandments.” Love motivates our obedience. Believing and receiving the love of God, THIS is what made the difference in my life. This is what will make a difference in your life!
As you sow your generous seed this month, be encouraged that the GREATEST expression of LOVE is GIVING: “For God SO LOVED the world that HE GAVE…” When you give to the kingdom, it is the HIGHEST expression of your Love for the Lord. Let’s be expressions of His Love in the earth, being a blessing to others everywhere we go! The Love of God…IT makes ALL the difference!!
We Love You,
Mylon and Christi
PS Please be assured that your financial seed is working to share His Love to the thousands we are reaching on the internet, TV, prisons and churches.
