Do you React or Respond?
Right up front we want you to know that we are praying for you today! You are not in this “fight of faith” alone. There isn’t a day that goes by that we and our prayer team aren’t standing with you for VICTORY! And we THANK YOU for your faith filled prayers, encouraging emails and beautiful notes! We understand how much your agreement strengthens us to do the will of God. He designed us for relationship in “the household of faith” and we need each other to finish our course with JOY! We are ANOINTED to shine as bright lights “in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation” (Phil. 2:15) and lead the nations to JESUS!
In the current crises environment: global pandemic, uncertain economy and dangerous riots, Isaiah 60:1-3 says that the glory of The Lord rises upon His children! But how can we shine in the midst of such “deep darkness?” One answer is found in James 1:19 NIV, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.” We can only obey this instruction if when challenged, we choose to respond and NOT react.
The definition of REACT is “To return an impulse.” The definition of RESPOND is simply, “To answer; to reply.” When we react, we are choosing to act impulsively; driven by our emotions, fear, anger or offense. But when we choose instead to respond, there is NO DRAMA. No outbursts. King Jesus is our perfect example! In Mark 4:35, 37-40 we see Jesus’ calm, measured response under pressure:
“On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.”And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, “Why are you so FEARFUL? How is it that you have NO FAITH?”
Jesus said the disciples’ emotional reaction was based in fear = the absence of faith. He responded to this life or death situation by saying (not screaming or tearfully pleading) “Peace, be still!” Please get this: there is no faith in emotional outbursts! And we know that faith is what pleases God. Hebrews 11:6 says, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him...” If you don’t get anything else, please get this:
FAITH RESPONDS. FEAR REACTS.
II Timothy 1:7 NKJV teaches us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” We must refuse to react emotionally because of the spirit of fear: Fear that we will lose our job or our bills won’t be paid. Fear that we or a loved one will get COVID-19. Any fear based emotional reaction produces: NO power. NO love. NO soundness of mind. Not only will our faith not work without love but confusion sets in and we can’t make wise decisions. Someone who is ruled by their emotions is what we would define as a “Drama Queen.” The definition of emotion is the “moving of the mind or soul.” Now do you see how serious this is? We don’t allow anything to move our mind or soul but our FAITH IN GOD AND IN HIS WORD!!
