As you are all aware, while we were all beginning to experience some semblance of life returning to normal after the quarantine, another wicked attack came from the enemy. The evil of racism violently demonstrated in the horrific murder of George Floyd. Christi and I both have endeavored to right this wrong our whole lives.
I grew up in the South during segregation but I have never had an all white band. Music is not black or white; it is just good or bad. In the 1960’s when Martin Luther King Jr. was marching, my band was not allowed to stay in certain hotels and I refused to stay where not all members of my band were welcome. Although I now have great honor for our law enforcement, at that time, I was ridiculed by police not only for the members of my rock band but also for being a hippie. I ended up in jail one time simply because they did not approve of my long hair, earrings, blue jeans and platform boots. Because of the way I looked, they assumed I was up to no good. After I gave my heart to Jesus, I was wearing these same clothes my first Sunday back in church and I was treated again with loathing and disgust by Christians. If it hadn’t been for the kind pastor who reached out to me that day, I would have left angry and hurt once again by their destructive, foolish assumptions. This is why I have always been vehemently against prejudice and racism. I am for a relationship with Jesus! He doesn’t base His love for us on anything exterior. When we receive the gift of His shed blood, He looks only at the heart.
Please understand that the enemy’s sole purpose in this latest attack is to divide us and stop the church from having the power of agreement. (Matt. 18:19) He knows that if he can get us fighting among ourselves, we will have no power. Ephesians 6:12 says that we are not doing battle “against flesh and blood.” This is not about black versus white. We are fighting “against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
As the battle rages, it’s time to have an honest conversation about racism. First, we must settle that The Word of God is THE TRUTH. II Corinthians 13:1 says, “By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.” Here is what God says about the race of man:
So, we know that we are ALL created in the image of God and if we are born again, we are all one IN HIM. The only dividing line God draws are those who belong to Jesus and those who don’t. According to The Truth there are no “races.” There is only one human race and we all descended from Adam and Eve.
We are witnessing great rage over this issue. We are warned of the danger of division and anger in James 3:14-17, explaining that strife and contention are from the devil. Verse 16 says, “For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.” If the enemy can get us arguing among ourselves or comparing ourselves to each other, then we open the door to confusion and every evil work! When we are confused, we cannot discern the leading of the Holy Spirit and this allows the devil to wreak havoc in our lives.
According to God’s Word, reacting in anger will never right a wrong. In James 1:19-20 NLT we read what love’s response should be: “Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.” We need to take time to listen to each other without finding fault. But first, we must forgive!
In Mark 11:26 Jesus said, “But IF YOU DO NOT FORGIVE, NEITHER WILL YOUR FATHER IN HEAVEN FORGIVE YOUR TRESPASSES.” The only solution to racism, anti-Semitism, prejudice or stereotypes for any person is forgiveness and humility. Our Lord Jesus is saying to us, if we want forgiveness then we have to forgive everyone of everything. If we don’t forgive, then we have sinned by refusing to obey our Lord! But if we CONFESS our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us. (I John 1:9) But please know this, we do have to confess. We have to humble ourselves and admit we were wrong. That’s the secret. It’s not always the other guys fault! Everyone needs to forgive and everyone needs to humble themselves.
If you are a person of color and we have ever offended you in any way, please forgive us, in Jesus name. We want you blessed and honored as a child of God and as our brother and sister in The Lord.
There is great reward for choosing love and forgiveness: God COMMANDS THE BLESSING!
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments. It is like the dew of Hermon, descending upon the mountains of Zion; for there the LORD commanded the blessing— Life forevermore.” Psalm 133:1-3 NKJV
